SNSD releases style book.

After a recent topic of Big Bang's 'Shout Yourself Into the World' publication, SNSD releases style book.

SNSD's getting spotlight as a trend setter, leading not only Kpop scene but also pop culture trend. Color skinny jeans in Gee performance are getting explosive popularity from young generation. Also SNSD has become a new pop culture code for their interests in fashion.

Elle Girl Chief Editor, Nam YoonHee, who planned the style book, said "When we first visited SNSD's dorm for investigate their styles, we thought it was hard to show SNSD's original characters only with their stages. SNSD Style book has 9 styles with practical styling tips."

This style book will be released on 17th March as Elle Girl April Issue's supplement.

Korean singer BoA has been featured for an interview on ‘The Hollywood Reporter (THR)’ site.

THR had an interview during the listening party held on 3rd for BoA’s upcoming 1st American album.

THR wrote in a post ‘BoA Invades America’ on their site, “Korea’s pop sensation BoA has released a new album to advance into the American market. BoA, who has sold over 20 million albums, is already a successful singer in Asia… THR identifies BoA as next global pop wonder to watch.”

They described in the interview, “BoA’s 1st American album ‘BoA‘ includes dance songs that are fresh, all the result her hardwork. It is the kind of music that is club music, but also music that can be enjoyed on the radio and as a performnance. This is the music for the American market.”

MBC variety ‘We Got Married’ is currently into its 3rd generation of make-believe celebrity couples.

Rumours have been floating around on Korean online noticeboards that we may be in for more participation from male idol singers for the upcoming 4th generation.

It has been a topic amongst fans after news went out that group Dong Bang Shin Ki and actress Lee Yeon Hee will be featured in Super Junior’s upcoming 3rd album.

Dong Bang Shin Ki members UKnow YunHo and Micky YooChun did a rap featuring in the song ‘Heartquake’ harmonising perfectly with a vocals of Super Junior member Kyu Hyun, Ryeo Wook and Ye Sung.

Lee Yeon Hee will also be featured in the song ‘Club No.1′. Meanwhile, the album include 12 songs in total. The album also include the participation of many famous composers like Kenzie and Yoo Yeong Jin. Fly To The Sky member HwanHee and Jo Joon Yeong had also composed the song ‘Let’s not….’ together.

Super Junior will have their comeback stage on KBS Music Bank on 13th March.

It's understood that Sun Ye will be flying off to Thailand on 25th February in preparation for the Wonder Girls concert in Bangkok 3 days later. A JYP representative expressed, "Sun Ye can't be there (Dongguk University) because she will be in Thailand. She herself finds that it's a great pity that she has to miss such an important ceremony." It's the same for YoonA who is unable to take out time from her busy schedule with Girls' Generation. The absence of the 2 idol stars will mean that there will be less fans and media attention congregating at Dongguk University on 26th February. A mighty relief for those can't be bothered students.

Joo who is actually in the same course, will most likely be there.

Father SM must be laughing Geeing all the way to the bank. Girls’ Generation has already made almost $2.5 million USD (3.5 billion KRW) in the first five weeks after their mini album “Gee” was released.

“Gee” has sold over 80,000 copies so far totaling close to $655,000 USD (960 million KRW). This is a remarkable accomplishment in such a short period of time compared to their first album, “Girls’ Generation,” which sold slightly over 125,000 copies in the span of one year. Girls’ Generation has made a little over $680,000 USD (1 billion KRW) from downloadable material which includes MP3’s, ringtones, etc… Last but definitely not least is advertising revenue which is over $1 million USD (150 billion KRW). SM Entertainment has been receiving up to four calls a day from different companies requesting the girls for their ad campaigns. Since Girls’ Generation is in such high demand, SM Entertainment has doubled their asking price and companies are not discouraged at all by this move. They view it as a sound investment to have the girls bless their ads, by hawking their products. Because of Girls’ Generations extreme popularity, whatever they touch turns to gold.

In Korea, asking someone about their blood type is as common as asking someone what their hobbies or preferences are. Koreans (and East Asians in general) believe that blood type has a correlation to one’s personality, even though it hasn’t been scientifically proven. The movie “My Boyfriend is Type B” (starring Han Ji Hye and Lee Dong Gun) is one manifestation of this; also, if you’ve played video games, you might’ve noticed that characters usually have their blood types included in the profile.

Though this blood type thing sounds like a lot of hoopla, East Asians, particularly Koreans and Japanese, take it pretty seriously, especially because there are certain beliefs (for example, men with blood type B are the worst, while people with blood type AB are either psychopaths or geniuses). There have been reports of celebrities even faking their blood type on their profiles, the way they would with their heights or weights, just to seem more desirable to their fans. So what are the characteristics attributed to each blood type?

Type A

U-know Yunho of DBSK/TVXQ/Tonhoshiki (and the list can go on and on…) has blood type A. People with this blood type are earnest, creative, sensible, but at the same time, fastidious and too earnest. As the leader of arguably the most popular boy band in Korea, Yunho probably has to have all those traits in order to manage the members. Many other examples of celebrities with blood type A are group leaders; G-Dragon of Big Bang, Sun Ye of Wondergirls, Lee Teuk of Super Junior and Jong Hun of F.T. Island.

Type B

T.O.P. of Big Bang is a celebrity example of someone with blood type B. People with this blood type are wild, active and they pursue things (i.e. they’re doers), but they’re also selfish and irresponsible. I don’t know how true that is; all I know is that T.O.P. is sizzling hot and even if he’s a type B (supposedly the worst type of guy), I wouldn’t mind. Other examples include Jessica and Yoona from Girls’ Generation, Si Won from Super Junior and Junsu and Chang Min from DBSK.

Type AB

Oddly, Yeeun, Sunmi and Sohee of the Wonder Girls all have this blood type. Even though type AB is considered the rarest, the proportion of this blood type is much higher in Korea than in the West. Anyway, people with type AB blood are cool, controlled and rational, but also critical and indecisive. Other examples are Tae Yang from Big Bang, Hyo Yeon from Girls Generation, Gyuri from KARA and Heechul and Yesung from Super Junior.

Type O

Kim Tae Hee is an example of type O; people in this blood type group are agreeable, sociable and optimistic, but also vain and rude. A couple of years back there was a slight anti-Kim Tae Hee movement where anti-fans said she had “gong-ju byeong”, which literally means “princess sickness” and describes someone who is excessively vain. Well, if you’re that gorgeous, wouldn’t you want to stare into the mirror all the time too? Other examples of celebrities with the most common blood type in the world are Young Saeng, Jung Min and Hyung Joon of SS501, Ryeo Wook, Eun Hyuk, Shin Dong, Kang In and Han Kyung of Super Junior (honestly, I think you can tell how “rare” a blood type is just by counting how many members of Suju have the bloodtype), Soo Young and Tae Yeon of Girls’ Generation and JaeJoong and Micky of DBSK.

9-member girl group Girls' Generation continued their ruthless march as they notched their 6th consecutive K-Chart win at KBS2TV Music Bank this evening, 20th February with their hit single Gee. They were up against Wax Not Even A Call and SS501 Boys Before Flower song Because I'm Stupid. But like all the other competitors in the past weeks, Girls' Generation came out on top once again against this week's competitors. The girls are on course to equal Jewelry's record of 7 wins in a row with One More Time set last year. Stay tuned for Music Bank next week to see if they manage to do it.

In response, Yuri merely laughed. Yuri replied “Heeing~ I don’t know. It’s so fun, I can’t help myself”. All members were dumbfounded by Yuri’s response, but soon they all giggled.

She can play baseball, basketball, and various other sports. When Yuri pitched at a baseball game for the Doosan Bears, her skilled pitching surprised everyone. People said her pitching reminded them of a major league baseball player Kim Byung Hun and gave her the nickname ‘BK Yuri’. The athletic Yuri is also very playful and has a bright personality.

“Sometimes, I’m curious about who I am. I think my personality is like a kaleidoscope, because my personality has various aspects.” said Yuri as she fidgeted with her fingers.

Then her eyes flashed.

“Since I was little, I had so much curiosity over everything. It really bothers me when I don’t try out everything. You know how there’s a kid who is always curious about what his/her mom packed for lunch? I was that kid; I would always open my lunch during 1st hour”. (laughs)

She tried out acting by being on a sitcom ‘Unstoppable Marriage’ in 2007. Yuri said, “I wanted to try out everything: acting, singing, and dancing. That’s because I’m curious about what my limit is”. I guess her endless curiosity is responsible for her endless talent.

“I want to try out something, which people least expect me to do. I would also like to be in an unimaginable situation." added Yuri. However, she doesn’t have a greed for worldly pleasures.

“Even though people may say I don’t have the mindset of a professional, I’m not really interested in things like ‘1 million album sales’ or ‘Promoting Overseas’. I just want to do something which will bring joy to people. If you didn’t know, I’m a happy virus. I think you’re already infected by it. Are you ok?”

You had Xiah Junsu flying through the air on a broom, Yunho with an umbrella, and Micky flying with wings. Each of the members had solo performances with Micky playing the piano. According to an official at SM Entertainment, while Boys Over Flowers was still in it's planning stages 2 years ago, TVXQ was approached and asked about playing the role of F4. So Nyeo Shi Dae members, YoonA and SooYoung both graduated from high school on the 11th as they received their diplomas and will embark on another journey at their respective universities. Despite earlier news that they will not be appearing on graduation day due to their busy schedules, both turned up respectively at Dae Yeong High School (YoonA) and Jeong Shin Female High School (Soo Young) to receive their diplomas (Soo Young missed the ceremony but turned up to collect her diploma). Having cleared the entrance exams last year, both YoonA and Soo Young will begin their college life majoring in theatre and music at Dongguk University and Joong Ang University respectively this March.

[News] Singer Ivy comeback as SNSD's "Dear Mom" writer

Singer Ivy, who has been taking a break since her sex video scandal in 2007, has made a comeback! Well.. sort of. On January 17th, Ivy made a comeback as a songwriter for SNSD's song in their first mini-album, "Dear Mom," in which Ivy used a pseudonym (pen name), "The Lighthouse." Ivy stated that she used a pseudonym instead of her actual name, because she felt pressured from the public. Ivy also added that her boyfriend, Kim Tae-Sung composed "Dear Mom," while she wrote the lyrics to it. The lyrics of the song are filled with compassion, for it expresses the feelings of a daughter towards her mother. With netizens wondering how her pseudonym was given away, SNSD's management company ensured that, "Since there are many people in the music industry who use pseudonyms, we didn't reveal who the songwriter of Dear Mom was."

[Misc] Korea’s most desirable bachelor and bachlorette

KBS did a poll for the most desirable bachelors and bachelorettes among Korean celebrities.

Number 1 went to G-dragon from Big Bang and Taeyeon from Girl's Generation! In 2nd was Xiah Junsu from DBSK and Kim Taehee, and 3rd went to Yunho from DBSK and Yoona from Girl's Generation.

Men voted for Taeyeon because she's cute, vivid, and fresh. Women stated that they prefered G-dragon's responsible style over manliness.

For the vote on most eligible dating partner it went Micky (DBSK), G-dragon (Big Bang) and Xiah (DBSK). As for the women, it went Taeyeon (Girls' Generation), Tiffany (Girls' Generation), and Nam Gyuri (SeeYa).

[News] SMTOWN LIVE is a HIT in Bangkok!

The February 6th SMTOWN LIVE concert in Bangkok, Thailand was a huge success. With a turn out of about 13,000 fans, barricades protecting the artists on stage were nearly torn down, as fans pushed to get a closer look at the stars.

In attendance at the concert were SHINee, Jang Ri in and Super Junior members. And for once, the crowd out numbered the sheer mass of Super Junior.

The other artists that also have their appearance on this live are DBSK & SNSD.

[News/Streaming Video] SNSD Taeyeon injured on KBS Music Bank

Girls' Generation / SNSD member Taeyeon was injured on the February 6th edition of KBS Music Bank. The injury occurred during their "Gee" performance with pyrotechnics / fireworks. During the performance, one of the fireworks shot up and hit Taeyeon in the face. The girls immediately stopped performing and rushed to her, along with the managers. But, Taeng's condition is OK that she wasn't hurt seriously.

Earlier this week, I revealed that Korea’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism was about to launch a mission to globalize Korean music. A meeting was hosted by several government officials on February 4th at one of SM Entertainment's branches, where Minister Yoo laid out his plans for promoting and spreading Korean music across the borders. He appointed DBSK, Wonder Girls, Rain, Big Bang, and SNSD as ambassadors, although not all members were present at the meeting.

One of the main goals on the minister’s agenda is to establish a qualified, creditable Korean music chart, like USA’s Billboards, Great Britain’s UK, and Japan’s Oricon charts. Minister Yoo and his team of experts will also develop and reconfigure award fields and criteria, methods of in-depth judging and reviews, and figure out how to operate the new Kpop chart to launch something like “Korea’s Grammy Awards” as well. Of course Korea already has many awards for singers and musicians, but it seems like he REALLY wants to be able to compete with America and what not. And how is this going to help ‘spread the word’ past China, exactly?

Over the next 5 years, up to 127,500,000,000 Won out of the treasury will be committed to the project. That’s over 92 million dollars! Call me crazy, but I think they can find far better uses for that money than showing the world how great Korean music is (which IS awesome, don’t get me wrong). This just goes to show how serious they are. Forget globalization, they’re making war on all the other music industries of the world. Part of the money (about 7 million USD) are already being used to remodel the MoonHwa Contest Hall and the Olympic Hall in Seoul; the revamped buildings will be ready to use (ie for concerts) by December of this year. All because the stadiums aren’t flashy and fancy enough as of now.

That’s not all. As some of you may know, 2-year military service in Korea is compulsory. Many bands have been broken up or forced to delay activities due to the required military service (think Shinhwa), although some artists such as Kim Jong Kook have made successful comebacks even after disappearing from the entertainment scene for two years. Minister Yoo is thinking of allowing artists to delay their service indefinitely or even skip out completely. The minister’s point is that he needs the young stars while they’re still young and talented, to be able to take on busy schedules, unhindered by age. Understandably many Korean citizen have protested his proposal, claiming that making exceptions can lead to big problems, and that as idols they should be setting good examples by doing their duty to their country.

SM Entertainment has announced on the official site, that SMEnt's Global Audition officially started on February 14th in Korea. They look for people that talented in singing, acting, modeling, dancing, and music composition. Anyone for every age and country are accepted to participates on the auditions. [News] Leeteuk of Super Junior Visits Son JaeHee

Son Jae-hee is battling cancer. The 12-year-old appeared on Star King in May 2008 and serenaded the crowd. At the same time, she fulfilled her dream of meeting the show’s host Kang Ho-dong.

Son Jae-hee was diagnosed with brain cancer on her birthday in 2007. She underwent two operations and 10 chemotherapy treatments and became much better; so much so that she appeared on the SBS variety program.

However, in December 2008, Son Jae-hee’s health took a turn for the worse. The tumor is back and it is spreading.

Super Junior’s Lee-teuk, who played the keyboard for little Jae-hee during her Star King appearance and visited the girl recently. He left her a personal message in an autographed CD.

Lee-teuk isn’t the only one who has visited Jae-hee. Kang Ho-dong dropped in on Jae-hee on Dec 23 last year. His visit was recorded for a Star King episode.

[News] Korean music to go global

Top singers Rain, DBSK, Big Bang, Girls’ Generation, and Wonder Girls will join forces to promote globalization of Korean music. The 5 bands have been appointed by Minister Yoo of Ministry of Culture and Tourism, perhaps while he was having a fit of Korean Pride. The exact plan of action will be revealed on February 4th at the SM Entertainment headquarters. So far, all we know is that the groups will be working together throughout the year as leaders of the Korean music industry to globalize Korean music.

Minister Yoo said:

“Those working in the music industry will come together with the government, in order to encourage globalization of Korean music.”

No one can be sure of what this means for our favorite bands or what the plans will include, but it seems that the government is taking an active part in spreading Korean music to different cultures. One can only hope the government is genuinely interested in using the singers to increase awareness of Korean culture rather than acting out of greed for foreign markets

Girls’ Generation has appeared on male site Complex.com (For a feeling of what the site is like, just look at their tag line: “Buy.Collect.Obsess - The original buyer’s guide for men.” Ugh). Titled “Meet Korea’s 9-Girl Pop Supergroup,” the article includes an introduction to their hit song “Gee,” and calls it “stupidly, stupidly addictive.”

It goes on to say, “Though SNSD may appear to consist of faceless Korean fembots, there really are nine distinct people in the group,” and proceeds to give individual photos and profile descriptions on each member.

Meanwhile, Girls’ Generation has won #1 for “Gee” in January 16th’s KBS “Music Bank,” January 18th’s SBS “Popular Song,” and January 23rd’s “Music Bank.” They have even ranked #1 for two weeks in a row on “Music Bank,” where they haven’t even performed yet.

The “Gee” syndrome has definitely been spreading through the music itself but also ringtones, the “Gee” dance, the lively choreography, the vintage fashion of their T-shirts, and it looks like this fever will keep catching on for now.

Girls, are you still idling away?

I finally managed to find our Korean manager, Hee Jun, and got the record of DBSK's stay in our hotel from her. I didn't get all the records, but I tried my best...

Hee Jun said she didn't really like the boys when she first met them at the airport at 2am in the morning... she knew that they were tired after flying the entire night, and she was full of expectations. Yet stars/celebrities meant unpredictability and that they were different from others. You must know that the newspapers are plastered with news about celebrities behaving oddly.

But the next few days, through her observations of and interactions with them, her opinion towards singers changed completely. She commented that they were really cute, kind, happy and polite! The leader, Yunho, was her favourite as he conducted himself really well, was very kind and showed a lot of concern for the people around him, be it another DBSK member or a hotel staff. Yunho is indeed a true gentleman as she described him!

DBSK's schedule of 2 days has been revealed. They were initially headed for shooting in Hawaii, but the price of passes/visas to Hawaii increased by a large margin, they had to shoot somewhere closer. Thus they chose Saipan.

DBSK had actually been to Saipan 3 years ago for shooting, and again for a vacation, but they had stayed in another hotel. What made us really proud was that one of the members of DBSK told Hee Jun that they did not like the previous hotel at all, and thought that ours was great! They would also be back again, for the sole purpose of having a vacation.

The members spent nearly all their time working, and only managed to "steal" a little time for themselves after returning to the hotel. They were really tired after the schedule ended, yet they did not want to leave. The members also worked with a cheerful attitude no matter how packed the schedule was.

On behalf of Xiah Junsu's birthday on the 1st, his fans had decided to donate 9 million won (approx. $6,700) to a Korean Charity called "Fruit of Love." This donation was made under Junsu's name and has been made for the past few years. The fans stated that "rather than a present, we thought that it would be bigger and more meaningful to donate to a charity under Xiah Junsu's name."

Another group of fans, from the fan site DNBN, had also collected and donated 5 million won (approx. $3,700) to the charity for DBSK's 5th year anniversary.

Big Bang's baby solo act Seungri was a guest on Chin Chin Radio with Kangin on Jan. 22nd, and what do you know, Junsu of Dong Bang Shin Ki, who Seungri has on more than one occasion confessed his love for, made a surprise phone call to the show.

The two chatted about DBSK's most recent Oricon Chart achievement, and Junsu said that he likes Seungri's song, and for him to continue to work hard at his solo career. Then Seungri blushed and giggled.

[News/Streaming Video] SHINee's Goodbye Stage

SHINee has come a long way since their debut 9 months ago. In that time, they've achieved first place on the various music shows and also won rookie of the year / best new artist awards. However, SHINee is now saying goodbye... but only temporarily.

SHINee will be taking a long deserved break and will be ending all their promotions. They will also work on their new album release during the break.

SHINee had their Goodbye Stage performance on KBS Music Bank. They will also have a Goodbye stage on MBC Music Core on the 24th.

SM Entertainment said that SHINee won't be gone for long and to anticipate a new side of SHINee.

[News] Tohoshinki hits #1 in Japan (Again)

On January 21st, with sales of over 60,000 on the first day of release. Tohoshinki / TVXQ's / DBSK's new single "Bolero" has achieved the first place slot on the Oricon Daily Charts. This will be the 6th time that TVXQ reached first on the Oricon Daily Charts. This also makes them the first foreign artist in Japan to have 6 first Oricon Daily singles. With this accomplishment, the boys will most likely reach first on the Oricon Weekly Chart as well.

KARA stated:

[News] Taeyeon and Kangin’s Apology

Taeyeon officially apologized to the nurses on January 19th's “MBC Radio Kangin and Taeyeon’s Chinhan Chingoo.”

DJ Kangin said in the opening “There’s a time when you feel the other person’s happiness when they say something. Then there is a time your life changes because of some words from another person. And then there are people who have to live their life with some words they said.” Taeyeon: “The power of words is big”. She added: “A small fire can burn down an entire forest.”

Kangin said “In your words, you have to think of the opposite. But depending on the circumstances you say words only from your perspective” and thus admitting the mistake Taeyeon did to the nurses. Taeyeon said: “I was sick last week and I didn’t think about the opposite when I said some things. I am really sorry if my words were wrong and have hurt you. I am going to try being more careful and thinking about the opposite.” After that, they both admitted the mistake and made an official apology to everyone.

Jaurim’s “20세기 소년소녀” was broadcasted after the apology. After the song, Taeyeon apologised again “I said it in the opening before but I want to apologize for my mistake last week. I think that I hurt many people and that many have thought that what I said was wrong. I feel immature about that.” With that she admitted her mistake and was close to tears.

Kangin said: “Once more again with my head down I want to express my words of apology. We will not repeat the same mistake. Again, Taeyeon and I are apologizing with our heads down.“

On the 12th, Taeyeon said: “I got to the hospital to get an injection but they said they couldn’t give me one because the nurse had to go to eat. But has the patient to be sick in the time when the nurse is free and has nothing to do like going to eat?” Because of that the discussions started. Kangin said “I think they lost their minds and only thought about themselves” and joked about “go to eat for the rest of your lives“.

As the discussion and anger of the nurses got too much, SNSD Taeyeon’s and Super Junior Kangin’s company SM Entertainment had to apologize fast but they didn’t know that discussions would continue. Thus they made an official apology through the radio broadcast on the 19th.

[News] Girls’ Generation’s explosive CD sales

SM Entertainment has reported that Girls' Generation's "Gee" mini-album has sold approximately 65,000 copies in just 13 days since it's release. In addition, they have also moved approximately 4,000 copies of their first album.

An Entertainment analyst stated:

The girls have picked up a lot of new fans during their 9 month hiatus. Girls' Generation is no longer just an idol band, but a top Korean band with mass appeal. The Girls' Generation brand can no longer be considered just a trend, instead they are permanent and have established a sense of long lasting value for consumers.

[News] K-POP SUper Live in Japan (January 31st)

6 of Korea's top artists/groups will be coming together for the "K-POP SUPER LIVE" concert. Well, maybe that's a bit of an over statement, because SG Wannabe are probably the only artists worth going for.

Shin Hyesung and Junjin of Shinhwa, SG Wannabe, Super Junior-Happy, Tei and Wheesung will be holding a joint concert on January 31st in Tokyo, Japan. This will be the 3rd year running of the K-POP SUPER LIVE concert.

Sports Apparel Brand Reebok has picked SHINee to be the new faces and represent their brand in Korea. Reebok stated that SHINee is starting the retro fashion trend for teens in Korea. So because of this Reebok is planning to re-release their Retro shoes from the 80's and 90's called the "Jam Collection."

On January 19th, Reebok released their first teaser CF featuring SHINee.
